FCRF Sees Increase in Prices of Colored Diamonds

Natural colored diamonds have been a hot market item for years. Their rarity and exquisite beauty make them valuable auction items and investments. Lately, though, owners and auctioneers of these precious colored stones have seen an increase in value.

Inspired mainly by the higher demand for blue diamonds, the price index of colored diamonds as a whole category rose notably in the second quarter, according to a diamond trading ethics nonprofit called the Fancy Color Research Foundation.

The Fancy Color Research Foundation-conducted survey of 20 wholesale diamonds traders indicated a 1 percent increase in sales in colored diamonds from April to July 2015.

Natural pinks, yellows and blue diamonds were the leaders in this rise. Rapaport also mentioned that within these colors specific categories showed significant increase than others. Items such as 1 carat fancy blues and 1 carat fancy vivid yellow diamonds improved by 4 percent. Rarer big size diamonds such as 8-10 carat pink diamonds and strong blues weighing over 3 carats showed an increase of over 6 percent.

This is even more interesting considering that during the same period, white colorless diamonds price index dropped 1.6%.

Ishaia Gol, an advisory board member with the Fancy Color Research Foundation, told Rapaport:

Fancy color diamonds are continuously demonstrating resilience and positioning themselves as a uniquely protected product category.”

This trend leaves many wondering: will colored diamond prices continue to rise and outshine their white counterparts?
