This article is a bit different than what I usually write about.

Normally, this blog focuses on the colored diamonds industry news, educational material and buying guides – and I’m proud to say that our material was featured in sites as Jeweller Magazine, Lifehack.org and many others.

This time, the post’s purpose is to clarify all of the confusion and misunderstanding surrounding Chocolate Diamonds®. Same diamonds that are often seen in various kay Jewelers ads just like the one placed here…

What is a Chocolate Diamond?

Well, the first thing you’d notice about chocolate diamonds is that they are beautiful and fairly inexpensive compared to regular diamonds – most chocolate rings priced at the $1,000 – $5,000 range which is below the average engagement ring price tag. Just look at these examples that currently cost $899 and $4,089 (click to enlarge):

In short, Chocolate Diamonds® are a trademark owned by Le-Vian group which describes nicely the color of the diamond.

Just like strong colored yellow diamonds are often referred to as canary diamonds and other shades of brown called Cognac and Champagne (I hope I didn’t share another industry secret…).

Here is Mr. Eddie Le Vian’s comment and explanation of what Chocolate Diamonds® are:

Chocolate Diamonds® are Le Vian’s proprietary brand of natural fancy color diamonds that are chosen for their rarity and chocolate flavor.

There are color, clarity and cut criteria, as well as responsible, traceable sourcing criteria for being branded as Chocolate Diamonds®. (Eddie Le Vian to Jezebel)”

Where do Chocolate Diamonds come from?

Just like colorless diamonds, colored diamonds come from all over the globe. The beauty is that every region (even every mine) that is known to produce colored diamonds is known to produce specific colors.

In the case of brown diamonds (and in them the specific shade referred as Chocolate), they are found mainly in Australia (Argyle), Angola, Borneo, Brazil and the Congo. According to Le-Vian, they source their brown diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine.

The Real Value of Chocolate Diamond Rings?

As I mentioned I want you to have ALL of the information! According to Jezebel’s writer – brown diamonds are the most common form of diamonds on earth and till not too long ago were used only for industrial purposes and therefore the prices of chocolate diamonds® should not be as high.

In the complementary article written at the Daily Mail the title of the article goes as far as calling jewelers liars and claiming they are fooling women.

Brown Diamonds do cost 50% less than medium quality white diamonds

The Jezebel’s article goes on and on about the deception and about the fact that these diamonds may be worthless in 20 years: “Imagine trying to sell a chocolate diamond in 20 years” and also about how they degrade women:

The name and marketing campaign is insulting on a few levels: Women won’t be able to resist, because it’s chocolate! Women won’t care that they’re just brown rocks if we call them chocolate! Women love to treat themselves, and indulge — and will buy something even if it’s not good for them!”

Really? I’m not a woman but do you think women would buy an $8,000 chocolate diamond ring because it is called chocolate? I think the one that degrades women is Jezebel by stating it…

Brown Diamonds are less expensive than white diamonds. Some might call them cheap (relatively speaking – these are diamonds and not chocolates after all).

Example Pricing of Brown Diamonds

The prices below of the brown diamonds are taken from actual diamonds on our site. The comparable white diamonds are taken from BlueNile.com – one of the cheapest suppliers for colorless diamonds.

3.09ct Dark Orangy Brown Diamond

3.45ct Dark Orangy Brown Diamond

2.04ct Fancy Yellow Brown Diamond

In the examples:

3.09ct Princess Dark Orangy Brown Diamond = $11,000
3.09ct Princess Cut G color, si2 = $25,000

3.45ct Round Dark Orangy Brown Diamond = $11,000
3.45ct Round G Color, si2 = $49,000

2.04ct Oval Fancy Yellow Brown Diamond, vs1 = $6,000
2.04ct Oval G Color, vs1 = $20,000

As can be seen… Brown Diamonds do cost a fraction of the price of equivalent white diamonds. So…

Why do Chocolate Diamonds cost more than Brown Diamonds?

According to Le-Vian, the entire concept of Chocolate Diamonds was invented to differentiate the brown diamonds that they are using which are of high color, good quality and sourced from the Argyle diamond mine than from the poor and low quality brown diamonds that one can buy cheap (like the ones you often find on eBay):

While it is true that there exists a high percentage of low clarity/ poor color brown diamonds, there is a small percentage, less than 5%, which are, in actuality, more beautiful and rarer than their colorless white counterpart; in fact, 10,000 times rarer.

It is this select group of diamonds that enticed Le Vian who recognized the value and rarity of the higher color and clarity natural brown diamonds which were unfairly grouped with the lower quality stones thus resulting in lower pricing.

While I can relate to that, as you can see from the examples above of GIA certified brown diamonds taken from our stock – I think this is not and should not be the point. The point is that Chocolate Diamonds are designer Jewelry and when you buy designer goods you pay more for many reasons. It is up to you to choose if you’d like to go that route or not.

Is the price of a Louis Vuitton bag made up of the amount of fabric used? Is the price of an iPhone similar to the price of an un-known Chinese cell phone?
What about the beautiful Tiffany rings? According to their financial reports they sold their products with over 61.5% gross profit… are they liars?

Same with Le Vian… they are designers. When buying from them you buy designer jewelry that always costs more.

The Truth about Chocolate Diamonds

In my opinion, this section is a bit out of the scope needed to understand Chocolate Diamonds but it is needed to answer all that was discussed in the Jezebel article. The writer proclaims that your Chocolate Diamond would be worthless 20 years from now and she quotes from the excellent book “Have you Ever Tried Selling a Diamond?”. Before I respond and explain let me ask you this:

Are you investing in colored diamonds or buying a present / engagement ring?

Brown Diamond Engagement Ring can easily cost 50% less than equivalent white diamond ring

In fact, these “evil brown diamonds” assist in breaking the “mold”, the “template” of regular engagement rings and allow people to design a personalized and unique diamond engagement ring at a fraction of the price of a regular ring.

When I proposed my wife, more than 10 years ago, at no point did I contemplate what the ring would be worth when we pass it to our kids. I simply wanted something beautiful that would put a smile on her face and that was personalized to her taste.

Saying (at least these days) that the saying “diamonds are forever“ was invented in order to prevent you from trying to sell your diamond is ridiculous. Diamonds do last forever, they do not ware off, hopefully your marriage would be the same… an obvious symbolic concept.

In recent years people are actually stepping out of the “Need to Buy a Diamond” and enter the concept of giving a token of love to your loved one – and yes, diamonds can do the trick but also Sapphires (see Kate Middleton’s engagement ring) and Colored diamonds which truly enable you to personalize the ring to the taste, style and character of your better half.

Have you ever tried selling a diamond? Or an iPhone? A Car?

The article stipulates that diamonds are far overpriced (especially Chocolate ones). At that point they quote Mr. Epstein who wrote back in the early 80′s about the De-Beers cartel. A very interesting book that I have enjoyed reading and learned a lot from on the industry and how it operates (or at least operated).

Mr. Epstein bought a diamond from a retailer on 47th st. for $1,500 and later tried reselling it (back to retailers!). He was offered far less for it and was told that it was low quality etc.

Mr. Epstein bought the diamond in one of the most expensive locations in the world. Of course it was overpriced.

Besides, the “rude” jeweler wanted to earn his share . Remember my example about Tiffany’s 60% gross profit… this means that a $1,500 dollar ring costs them around $600… Do you think that if you go to Tiffany’s and offer them to buy a diamond ring from you for $600 they would accept? Even $500…?

Also, when a jeweler is buying a diamond from his supplier do you imagine they tell their suppliers “it is an amazing diamond I want it” or something in the lines of “it is mediocre and is not worth the price you are asking…”?

Jezebel – Have you ever tried selling your used car? Did your buyer complement you on how the car is well maintained or did he show you all the flaws and offered less? How much does Amazon charge for used books? (can you imagine for how much they buy them…?)

And who buys a diamond these days without a certificate stating its findings? Today, if Mr. Epstein (or any buyer) were to buy a certified diamond no jeweler could have told him anything about the quality of the diamond…

But what do I care about Chocolate Diamonds?

I don’t sell Chocolate Diamonds® or any of Le Vian’s goods nor we are their suppliers.

In my early days in the natural colored diamonds industry I made the mistake of blogging a lot about Chocolate Diamonds®.
It seemed so natural to me to call these dark brown diamonds Chocolate Diamonds® that I never even suspected it’s a registered trademark.
I assumed these are shades of brown diamonds exactly like cognac and champagne. Only as the time went by and I learned more about colored diamonds I came to realize this “hard truth”.

So why do I care…?

Short Editorial Note

Every once in a while, especially when the scent of diamonds is in the air (like Valentines & Christmas), comes an article and debates the concept of using diamonds as a token of love.

A while back was the great post “diamonds are bullshit” (no sarcasm intended though it lacked some fundamental facts) and recently the news industry decided to rant about chocolate diamonds® with an article at Jezebel - “The Truth About Chocolate Diamonds“ and its spin-off at the Daily Mail which took it to extreme “How jewelers are fooling women by repackaging the common brown diamond as an expensive gem”.

What is all the fuss about?

According to Jezebel, they “uncovered” the truth behind the diamond industry’s best kept secret – What Chocolate Diamonds® really are… (here sarcasm is intended).

So, While I truly recommend reading both articles, I’ll try to summarize the points, putting order into things along with somewhat deeper understanding – removing the headline hunting and adding real valuable information.

I simply feel that there are misleading facts in the article that abuse brown diamonds and with them Le Vian.

Last small note…

Since the articles were published, we approached The Daily Mail and Jezebel (and writer) trying to tell the other side of the story. Unfortunately, to this point we did not get any response and therefore published it here…

Timeless fancy color diamonds will always make an appearance on Hollywood’s red carpets, no matter the occasion, and the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards was no exception.

Like at any good awards ceremony, Hollywood’s beauties were present in their absolute finest, and that included some incredible jewelry. The most notable trends were stackable diamond bracelets, with some celebrities wearing as much as 3 diamond bracelets on one or both wrists, multi finger rings, many rings on many fingers, and statement earrings. Hardly any necklaces were seen at all and colorful jewelry was present in abundance.

The famous Game of Thrones actress wore a black lace Valentino gown and accessorized with a show stopping yellow diamond ring by Forevermark and earring set and finished with a yellow diamond necklace.

The huge fancy intense yellow diamond on her ring was set in a halo setting with a unique pave diamond row on the wide yellow gold band. Her drop earrings were similarly large fancy intense yellow diamonds with a halo setting, but her necklace was a unique design comprised of pear shaped yellow diamonds and round brilliant yellow diamonds.

Diamonds are often worn as rings, bracelets and necklaces, but designer Roland Iten is attempting to step outside of the box with a new flashy creation. His latest design features a fancy orange brown diamond, also known as cognac diamond,on nothing other than a belt. After all, why limit yourself to wearing a beautiful gem above your neck when you can display it on your waist?

R60 Diablo

Clearly, this is much more than just a tool a man can use to keep his pants up. The flashy belt, named the R60 Diablo, is the most expensive – and quite possibly the only – belt of its kind. Iten has worked on a line of men’s luxury accessories, and this piece tops the charts with a value of $9 million dollars. The belt will be up for private auction at Christie’s, and it’s likely to be a piece that garners a great deal of interest.

SEE ALSO: Most Expensive Dress Features a Red Diamond

The belt buckle is captivating for a number of reasons. The mechanics alone are enough to cause a spectacle, as the buckle opens with one touch of a button. Not only that, but the actual piece is made of a beautiful, high-end combination of metals, including 18-karat 5N rose gold, white gold and grade 5 titanium. Top all of that off with the breathtaking cognac diamond that it holds, and there’s no wonder why everyone’s been talking about it.

Cognac diamond

Any diamond could instantly enhance a belt buckle, but the one chosen as the display of the R60 is especially beautiful. The nearly flawless orange brown diamond weighs in at 60.66 carats. Its kite shape adds to its unique design, and perfectly accentuates the shape of the buckle. The diamond originated from deep within Indian mines – the same ones that brought the world the 45.52-carat Hope Diamond and the 545.66-carat Golden Jubilee, which are renowned, striking jewels.

When you consider the rarity of the diamond, you might be wondering what kinds of safety features are involved in making sure the stone is secure. Iten, being the great designer he is, already anticipated this and included four different forms of reinforcement that will keep the gem in place. The diamond isn’t going anywhere – except to the home of the lucky bidder who purchases it, of course.

It’s no secret that Sarah Jessica Parker is a style guru. The A-list actress has long been considered a tastemaker, and not only because of her role as Carrie Bradshaw or her coveted red carpet ensembles. More recently, Parker has been showing off her design skills, with a line of women’s clothing and shoes for Nordstrom. Now she’s proving that she knows a thing or two about jewelry design, too.

Parker teamed up with famed jewelry designer Cindy Chao to create a one-of-a-kind brooch that spiked the interest of diamond enthusiasts and jewelry collectors when it debuted during the Paris Haute Couture Week in July.

Moreover, the “Ballerina Butterfly” brooch will surely attract a lot of bids when it’s auctioned off at the Sotheby’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Sale in October.

Spectacular Brown Sparkle

The piece is constructed of 18-karat gold and titanium, and features a jaw-dropping 26.67-carat cushion-cut fancy brown diamond, three rough brown diamond slices totaling 47.71 carats, three conch pearl pieces weighing 7.25 carats, all surrounded by a staggering 4,698 diamonds and fancy colored diamonds weighing 98.09 carats.

According to the International Diamond Exchange, the brooch took two years to make. Rapaport reported that presale estimates indicate the brooch will sell between $750,000 and $950,000. Fittingly, all proceeds from the sale of the “Ballerina Butterfly” will benefit the New York City Ballet, an organization that Parker said is close to her heart.

A Creative Friendship

This isn’t the first butterfly brooch that Chao has created, however. It’s a tradition for the designer, who, since 2008, has made a Black Label Masterpiece Butterfly every year. Rapaport noted that this theme is meant to represent her metamorphosis as an artist. However, the “Ballerina Butterfly” marks her first collaboration on these jewels. It was at the opening of Chao’s Beijing boutique in 2012, at which Parker was an honorary guest, that the two decided to team up and design a brooch together for the sake of charity.

Sarah Jessica and I are two very different creative minds sharing the same artistic vision and passion,”

said Chao, according to Rapaport. “She truly appreciates the essence and soul of my creations, and I admire her innovative yet classic view on fashion and style. My annual butterflies carry special meaning for me. Collaborating with Sarah Jessica for a cause we both deeply care for and believe in makes this Ballerina Butterfly all the more special in my heart.”

As you look to transition your attire from summer into fall, you’re likely searching for new accessories that can complement your wardrobe as well as speak to the change of seasons.

There’s one stone that could be the perfect solution: champagne diamonds. Style expert Michael O’Connor told NewsUSA that he predicts these stones, which primarily come from Rio Tinto’s Argyle Mine in Australia, will continue to surge in popularity as the summer draws to a close.

Champagne Diamond – Poised for a major Comeback

“What we are seeing from the latest 2014 fall fashion trends is a match fit perfectly for champagne diamonds,” he told the source. “The light champagne to rich cognac natural shades are neutral, making them a perfect combination for all the neutrals that we’re seeing in fashion as well as all of the rich brighter gemstone colors, popular at holiday time.”

One of the key advantages of these gems is that while they boast the rarity and beauty of fancy colored diamonds, they don’t come with as hefty a pricetag. In fact, their cost can be far more affordable than diamonds in other hues, such as blue or pink. Better yet, their elegant yet earthy tone is ultra versatile.

O’Connor noted that champagne diamonds go with warm autumn hues, such as orange, cranberry, honey mustard and crimson, but also work with subtler hues like camel, cocoa, ivory and charcoal. Even dusty rose, lavender and other pastels look stunning with champagne diamonds. Additionally, they can just as easily dress up denim as they can add intrigue to a satin gown.

A-list actress and tastemaker Sarah Jessica Parker’s first foray into the jewelry realm offers further proof that diamonds in this hue are bound to make a splash on the jewelry scene. NTD.TV reported that Parker collaborated with famous fine jewelry designer Cindy Chao to create a one-of-a-kind titanium and 18K gold brooch, which contains brown diamonds along with conch pearls. It will certainly draw a lot of attention when it goes up for bidding at a Sothebys’s Hong Kong auction this October.

When most people think of colored diamonds, gemstones in shades like blue, pink, green and even purple tend to come to mind. However, one colored stone that has only recently gained popularity, both among jewelers and consumers, is brown or champagne-toned gems. According to The New York Times, these beautiful natural brown, or champagne diamonds, weren’t even on the market until the early 1990s.

Parcel of Natural Brown Diamonds – From Industrial to Fashionable

Brown diamonds dubbed unsellable

In the 1990s, a large discovery of brown diamonds was found at the Argyle mine in Western Australia. Due to their imperfections and small size, many of these gemstones were used for industrial purposes – especially since retailers didn’t like their look, the news outlet reports. Much of the disdain for brown diamonds came from how jewelers and buyers were trained.

SEE ALSO: The Truth about Chocolate Diamonds, iPhones, Books and Cars

Elizabeth L. Chatelain, president of MVI Marketing, said training from the Gemological Institute of America drilled into retailers’ minds that when it comes to diamonds, “whiter is better.” With this way of thinking, brown diamonds were instantly labeled “off-color goods,” Chatelain told the news outlet.

A change of heart

Fancy Dark Orangy Brown Diamond

Despite the struggle mining companies faced in marketing these darker gems, the jewelry industry began to see the value of these diamonds at the turn of the millennium. At this time, brown diamonds were priced between 15 and 25 percent lower than white diamonds (even less today), giving retailers and interested buyers the opportunity to purchase these shimmering stones for a reasonable price. In fact, many designers began to realize that they could create more extensive designs with brown diamonds, while marketing to a much wider array of clients.

“It gave designers a way to do quite exuberant and elaborate diamond designs at a lower cost,” Sally C. Morrison, director of the Diamond Information Center, told the news source. “There are so many shades to create nuance and texture using browns. It’s a way to paint in color.”

Champagne diamonds continue to grow in popularity

With a mix of marketing campaigns and creativity, champagne diamonds started to take off within the jewelry industry. Not only do these natural gemstones boast a unique color, but they’re also becoming rarer than other fancy diamonds, making them even more desirable. Champagne Diamond Center reports just 1 in 10,000 diamonds are of natural color, meaning owning one is a true treasure.

The Different Shades of Brown Diamonds

Many stars, including Rihanna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez and style icon Gisele Bundchen have be known to don these spectacular gemstones, meaning you’ll be in good company with the purchase of a breathtaking brown diamond.

Diamonds may be known as a girl’s best friend, it was 12-year-old Michael Dettlaff who recently caught the world’s attention for finding a dazzling gemstone. According to USA Today, the North Carolina native scored big while searching for precious diamonds on the grounds of Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. Not only did Dettlaff unearth a diamond, but one of the largest gemstones ever found in the park.

Dettlaff’s 5.16-carat brown diamond is the 27th-largest find in the park since 1972. The tween, who was vacationing with his family, found the large gemstone after just 10 minutes of digging July 31. The diamond, which Dettlaff named God’s Glory, is about the size of a jelly bean, and per the park’s policy, the young boy will get to keep his impressive colored diamond.

Though some might hold onto the diamond as an investment, Dettlaff told ABC News he’d like to sell it for a profit, but he’d be fine with holding onto it as a keepsake if selling the gemstone doesn’t pan out.

“When I brought this rock out of the bag, the guy who was there, he just went bug-eyed,” the preteen told the news source. “If it can be cut and is valuable, I’d like to sell it. And if it’s not, it’s just a great souvenir.”

Waymon Cox, a park interpreter, said in a letter that while it’s always special when someone finds a diamond on the property, having such a young visitor do so is even more magical.

“It is thrilling any time a child finds a diamond here at Crater of Diamonds State Park,” Cox said. “Michael was excited to have found his own diamond, as just about any boy would be, but he was absolutely awestruck when he realized its significance …”

Dettlaff’s diamond is the 328th found at the park this year. Including the Patriot Diamond, a large 2.95 carat brown that was found on the 4th of July.

Digging for gold and diamonds has been part of America’s past since the famous California Gold Rush. While only a few amateurs were lucky enough to find glittering gems back then, even fewer are able to do the same today. However, one lucky Kentucky man, Terry Staggs, recently hit the jackpot while searching for diamonds at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Ark.

Staggs, who has been searching for diamonds at the state park for 28 years, stumbled upon an impressive 2.95-carat rough brown diamond July 4. The gemstone, which he has named “Patriot Diamond” due to its Independence Day discovery, is not only the first diamond ever found by Staggs, but the biggest gem to come out of the park this year.

How the diamond was found

Park interpreter Waymon Cox said it’s more common for people to find white and yellow diamonds rather than brown, because the darker hue tends to blend in with the dirt.

“Because of their color, brown diamonds are often difficult to find in the dark dirt of the diamond search area. However, sunny weather conditions on July 4th were perfect for this sparkler to catch Mr. Staggs’ attention as he searched,” Cox said. “Mr. Staggs’ gem was found in gravel on the surface of the East Drain area. Sunlight reflecting off the diamond made it stand out from the other stones.”

Staggs said he had been searching the grounds in the East Drain area for approximately two hours before finding the stunning brown diamond.

About the park

Crater of Diamonds State Park is a 37.5-acre field and is the only diamond-producing site that is open to the public. The park runs off of a “finders, keepers” policy, meaning anything a visitor finds is his to bring home. According to the facility’s official website, the geology of diamonds found on site go back more than 3 billion years, “with the formation of diamonds as the stable form of carbon in the Earth’s mantle.”

Since 1906, more than 75,000 diamonds have been unearthed on the grounds, though the area didn’t become a national state park until 1972, WHAS 11 reports. While plenty of smaller diamonds have been found, the area is also home to the largest diamond ever dug up in the U.S. The white diamond with a pink cast called “Uncle Sam,” was found in 1924 and weighed in at 40.23 carats.

Champagne Diamond

The champagne diamond is the diamond of choice that is replacing the traditional white diamond, but why? First, what’s a champagne diamond?

Diamonds have a variety of colors and each colored diamond has its own unique shade. This is in part is what makes a diamond so valuable. Diamonds can be red, blue, pink, purple, yellow, orange, green, black, gray, and brown.

Of the many different shades and colors, brown diamonds or champagne diamonds had never been popular and were valued only for industrial use. Brown diamonds are also a lot more common than any other diamond – as much as 80% more common. They get their natural color from irradiation or nickel impurities.

So how did brown diamonds go from worthless jewelry to choice gems? The answer is in the color. The very thing that made them less attractive in the past has made them hot item today among celebrities and those of high fashion sense.

With a little help of marketing, brown diamonds received more attractive names such as Champagne diamonds and Cognac diamonds. The love of cognac and champagne diamonds comes from their warm color and classy look that fits with any wardrobe. Combining brown diamonds with traditional white diamonds creates a stunning appeal.

Some of the more popular shades (popular synonyms) of brown diamonds are: Champagne diamonds that have a light golden brown color; Cognac Diamonds that have a warm radiant glow of orange and red; Honey diamonds that have a light amber color; Cinnamon Diamonds that are light brown; and Clove Diamonds that are dark olive brown in color. However, the dominant two are cognac and champagne.

Some of the many colors of brown diamonds are yellow-brown, orange-brown, the rare reddish-brown, and of course the many different intensities of brown from light to deep and dark. As long as it is a dark and deep color, it is considered a cognac brown diamond. Like with other natural colored diamonds, when it comes to brown diamonds the carat doesn’t matter determine the worth as much as the color. If we try to generalize, the darker and deeper the brown, the more valuable is the diamond.

Another factor that has made the brown diamond all the rage is the price.
