There has been a lot of publicity surrounding diamond heists recently, and it seems some thieves have the stunning jewels on their minds. Another theft of the precious gems occurred in Naperville, Ind., where a few individuals robbed a jewelry store and managed to escape with more than $180,000 in diamonds.

How it happened

The robbery, which took place in the jewelry store just before 12 p.m. Aug. 26, was the act of three individuals who used some basic tactics to distract the store clerk and make off with the gems. ABC News reported that it began with one man, who entered the store and asked to look at loose white and color diamonds for a future ring. As the worker removed the jewels from the secure case, two other individuals entered the building and began asking the clerk for help.

During the confusion, one of the women who came into the shop after the diamonds were removed from the case reached over and grabbed the box of gems. She then moved behind a pillar, placed the jewels in her purse and casually walked out of the store. The two accomplices followed and the store worker, recognizing the ruse, followed them. However, the trio quickly scattered in different directions and managed to evade the jeweler.

All together, the thieves stole an estimated 20 white and fancy colored diamonds worth between $180,000 to $185,000, according to the news source.

Reward offered

Security footage caught images of the three suspects, but so far police have been unable to find out more, and they are ready to turn to the public for help. Indiana police are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information surrounding the heist and the three suspects.

The reward for this Naperville heist pales in comparison to the one currently on the table for information surrounding the highly publicized theft of diamonds from a hotel in Cannes, France. That $136 million robbery, which may be the largest jewel heist of all time, was carried out by one individual who managed to grab dozens of gems and escape in less than a minute. In an attempt to recover the collection, the company that insured the stolen goods is offering a reward of $1.3 million to anyone who can provide information that leads to the diamonds, Reuters reported.
