September 12th, 2013 by Noam Flint

Some of the most famous colored diamonds in the world are a brilliant blue hue that continues to entrance people all over the world. The combination of the exclusive nature of these gems and their gorgeous appearance set them apart from other jewels, and when a striking diamond enters the market, people take notice.

Perhaps that is why the Bonhams Fine Jewelry sale attracts so much attention – and why some of the items included in its September sale are slated to change hands for significant prices.

On the auction block

When Bonhams gets its upcoming London sale underway Sept. 18, it will feature a stunning blue diamond ring. Weighing in at 1.02 carats, the blue diamond is mounted between two smaller radiant-cut white diamonds. The ring is expected to command between $253,000 and $300,000 at the auction.

The blue diamond isn’t the only show-stopping piece on the auction block at Bonhams. Various other pieces, including natural pearls, art deco jewelry and stunning pendants, are also slated to attract attention, although they all may pale in comparison to the colored diamond ring.

Earlier in 2013, Bonhams sold a different blue diamond ring for $9.6 million breaking the world record. Known as the “Trombino” ring, this item was the highlight of the company’s April auction and is only one of the many colored diamonds successfully showcased by Bonhams.

The auction house looks to continue this tradition of stunning gems. While they will certainly have a wide array of other breathtaking jewels, this blue diamond rings will likely be the item that has collectors talking long after the sale is finalized.

A history of brilliant blue diamonds

Blue diamonds are particular rare, one of the rarest colors in the niche of natural colored diamonds, making the various pieces of jewelry in high demand. Since colored diamonds in general are less than 1 out of 10,000 – account for far less than 1 out of 100,000. This makes their value on the open market is quite high, especially if the color is intense enough to be described as “fancy” or above.

Bonhams’ upcoming auction will feature just one of the many blue gems that have been attracting attention lately. Sotheby’s recently made waves with the news that it would be selling a stone known as “The Premier Blue.” The Gemological Institute of America graded this diamond as internally flawless and brilliant cut, and the 7.59-carat gem is expected to command $19 million at its early October sale.
