Who says you need to wear diamonds on your fingers?

Colored diamond enthusiasts and shoe collectors alike were delighted Dec. 4 when Antwerp revealed what they have named the “World’s Most Expensive Shoes,” giving a whole new meaning to luxury footwear.

The black leather wedge ankle boots sport a fashion-forward paisley pattern as well as nearly 39,083 natural fancy colored champagne, pink and gray diamonds, totaling 1,550 carats and set in 4,783 grams of gold. Near the top of the boots’ shaft is the A.F. Vandevorst cross-shape logo, which is constructed from the extremely rare reddish-pink diamonds. All of the colored diamonds come from Antwerp-based companies.

These shoes were not easy to design. Selecting and setting the diamonds apparently took 30,000 man hours. So what is the price tag on these stunning shoes? They are valued at $3.1 million, meaning they surpass the $3 million record set by Stuart Weitzman with a special pair of Rita Hayworth-inspired diamond-studded shoes sold in 2006.

In an effort to celebrate Antwerp’s fashion and diamond industries, Belgian luxury label A.F. Vandevorst collaborated with diamond company Diarough to design the dazzling shoes, which were unveiled to awe-inspired attendees during the Business of Design Week in Hong Kong. Business of Design Week is meant to celebrate Belgian creativity, and surely these boots were a major highlight. Nearly 400 VIPs were there for the reveal, including Kris Peeters, minister-president of the government of Flanders, and Queen Mathilde of Belgium. The Chinese artist Yi Zhou strutted down the catwalk in the boots for the unveiling.

These shoes won’t fit everyone, however – after all, only one pair was constructed and they are a European size 39. Still, it’s unlikely that anyone would want to wear these shoes, as captivating beauty and high price tag make them more of a collector’s item. So whether they fit or not, they make a dazzling addition to anyone’s closet.
