More Elizabeth Taylor Jewels going up for Auction

July 31st, 2013 by Noam Flint

Actress Elizabeth Taylor was more than just an on-screen legend. She was also known for her extensive jewelry collection. According to Time magazine, in a 2011 auction at Christie’s in New York, many pieces from the late Taylor’s estate were sold off.

Gorgeous items like a sparkling emerald and diamond Bvlgari necklace, a gift from her husband Richard Burton, the Taj Mahal Diamond, another gift from Burton on her 40th birthday, and perhaps her most famous piece, the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, a 33.19-carat stunner, also from Burton, were all auctioned off.

While these gems were sold to the highest bidders, they represented only a fraction of the reported $30 million worth of jewelry the late actress acquired throughout her career (and from her seven husbands). Now, even more colored diamonds, gold headpieces and other gemstones are set to be sold to lucky fans and collectors.

What will be up for auction this time around?

According to Reuters, the latest pieces to be auctioned off from Taylor’s estate include an 18-carat multi-gem earring and necklace set as well as the falcon headdress Taylor wore in the 1963 film “Cleopatra.” These and other gorgeous jewelry are set to be sold at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif., October 12.

The collection is reportedly being auctioned off by an unidentified former employee of Taylor. However, the pieces will first go on display at a museum in Ireland. “The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor” will be on display at the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons from July 30 until shortly before the Oct. 12 auction.

Other personal items for sale

While the jewelry is sure to be a large draw among investors, many other personal items near and dear to the iconic actress will also be up for sale at the upcoming auction. According to Reuters U.K., clothing including a decolletage-baring spaghetti-strap gown and a bolero jacket, both designed by South African designer Chris Levin, are being auctioned off, as is an antique inlaid wooden stagecoach box. The box was originally used by Taylor’s mother, actress Sara Sothern, and comes with glass toiletry jars made with pearl handles.

Each piece is expected to go for thousands of dollars, though the multi-gem earring and necklace set is expected to rake in the most – sources estimate the jewelry will fetch between $10,000 and $15,000.
