Experts Predict Colored Diamond Craze to Continue

Some trends come and go, but others simply don’t disappear. It’s no secret that the popularity of colored diamonds has continued to surge in recent years, and their demand shows no sign of slowing down.

As collectors and investors realize their rarity, versatility and beauty, they have been flocking to auctions and retailers for a few colored stones of their own.

Besides having a remarkable value, one of the best things about these diamonds is that no two look quite the same. They come in a wide array of hues and shades, from pale blues to rich purples and smoky grays, meaning that they appeal to people with a range of tastes and can lend a unique touch to any piece of jewelry.

No Longer Just for the Upper Crust

MainStreet explained that while these gems were previously owned mainly by the elite, mainstream buyers are now adding them to their collections. According to the source, the classic round-cut remains a top choice, but rectangular-cut and cushion-cut stones are gaining increasing attention.

From colored diamonds splashed across the pages of fashion magazines to celebrities on television to women and men flaunting them at high-society events, these stones have accumulated a strong following,”

Gino DiGeso, director of the Natural Color Diamond Association, told the news outlet. “Today, colored diamonds are becoming more popular and mainstream.”

As MainStreet pointed out, colored diamonds have been making a splash in the news headlines with some record-shattering bidding results. For example, the source cited the 13.22-carat Perfect Blue – a pear-shaped blue diamond that fetched $23.8 million, or $2 million per carat, at a Christie’s auction in May.

Endless Design Possibilities

In an interview with Rapaport, Paola De Luca, founder, creative director and forecaster of Trendvision Jewellery & Forecasting, had similar insights about the rising popularity of colored diamonds.

“There are many different grades and colors of diamonds, which make diamonds extremely affordable and accessible,” she said. “Gemstones have a fantastic design of their own, but there are also millions of designs that can be done in combination with diamonds, which can be used to underline a gemstone’s beauty.”

According to De Luca, there is more room to be creative with the design with custom jewelry with colored diamonds, which is why it has an advantage over pre-designed fine jewelry. By purchasing loose pink, yellow, orange or other colored diamonds, you have the freedom to set them however you choose. This now only gives you more control over how your jewelry looks, but also ensures that your pieces are one-of-a-kind.
