For our readers who don’t know JCK, it is no surprise because it is oriented towards the jewelry industry members. But the fact is that it is one of the most important magazines followed by jewelers from all over the world.
To better explain its purpose, I took the liberty to quote their about page:
Through editorially independent, in-the-know, and compelling journalism, JCK magazine offers readers expanded coverage of the most important jewelry industry issues and style trends impacting their businesses”
With that in mind, like many others in the industry, I constantly follow their blog.
And the recent article in their Style 360 blog written by Jennifer Heebner (JCK’s market editor) was extremely interesting.
Heebner provides no less than 12 predictions as for where the jewelry industry is headed in 2016.
Here are 5 takeaways projected onto the colored diamonds niche:
2016 Jewelry Trend Predictions
- Black and White –
Black diamonds are real and here to stay!
In fact, demand for black diamonds is constantly on the rise and combining them with white diamonds and white gold for the contrast makes an amazing piece of jewelry. Whether cheap or expensive black diamonds (treated vs natural) – we see no reason why the demand will settle down.
Demand for Black Diamonds
- Asymmetry –
With colored diamonds being so rare, finding a matching pair is practically impossible and mismatching earrings is almost a must.
What may have started as a way to deal with this problem has grown in demand and seems to be part of the new trend.

- Fancy Cuts –
Unfortunately, when colored diamonds are cut into the classic round shape they lose color. And since diamond color in colored diamonds is by far the most important C in their value, most colored diamonds out there are cut into fancy shapes such as Cushion and Radiant which help to emphasize the color.
- Stacking Rings –
Since price per carat increases as the size of the diamond increases, stackable rings mounted with melee diamonds are ideal to create an amazing sparkle at a fraction of the price. And if you mix and match the diamond colors, the result is outstanding!
- The Color Gray -
According to Heebner, since Pantone’s color of the year is pink and blue and will dominate the clothing industry, gray is ideal for a completing piece of jewelry. And what is better than gray diamonds to do the trick? Chic, elegant and fairly affordable they will definitely live up to the challenge.
