Kim Kardashian’s Diamond Engagement Ring Makes Headlines

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have been dominating the headlines thanks to news of his exuberant marriage proposal, but now the bride-to-be’s engagement ring is stealing the spotlight.

The new ring

Only a few images of the stunning gem have been released, but the select details that have come out about the ring have jewelry lovers standing at attention. The ring is anchored by a 15-carat emerald-cut diamond boasting stunning clarity, and that main stone is impossible to miss in the pictures that have been released.

The rapper turned to famed jeweler Lorraine Schwartz to help him create the engagement ring. Schwartz is not only one of the best in the business, but she is also close friends with the artist, and their relationship made it possible for West to have major input on the piece.

“Kanye was involved in every single way,” a representative for Lorraine Schwartz told E! Online (ring’s pictures inside). “He had a vision from the beginning. He looked at a lot of stones and he wanted only the best. He and Lorraine emailed back and forth, and stayed up nights discussing how he wanted it to be. He wanted the diamond to look like it was floating on air. Everything was his idea from beginning to end.”

Because the musician wanted the setting to have a delicate feel, it’s highly likely the ring uses a platinum mounting, JCK magazine reported. There’s a good chance the setting had to be incredibly thin to achieve his desired effect, and platinum is the metal that would provide the most strength with the smallest base.

The exact cost of the ring is not known, but between the high number of carats and the personalization, it may be valued anywhere from $3 million to $8 million.

A reputation of excellence

This isn’t the first time iconic jeweler Lorraine Schwartz has designed a high-profile engagement ring. She previously came up with the plan for Blake Lively’s pink diamond engagement ring from Ryan Reynolds. That bauble, which featured a 10-carat oval-cut light pink diamond, reportedly cost as much as $2 million, according to The Daily Mail. However, even that gorgeous colored gem would have a hard time competing with the stone at the center of Kardashian’s engagement ring.

“The ring is flawless,” the Lorraine Schwartz rep told the E! Online. “Not just internally flawless, it’s flawless. It’s a D-stone, the best diamond there is, type 2A. It’s a perfect cushion-cut diamond.”
