Red Carpet Recap: Winning Jewelry at the 2014 Oscars

March 4th, 2014 by Noam Flint

There was no shortage of sparkle in Tinseltown for this year’s Oscars, with Hollywood’s elite all donning some of the most jaw-dropping color diamond jewels to complement their elegant ensembles. This event truly marks the peak of awards season and the epitome of glamor, meaning the pressure is on for A-listers to wow on the red carpet.

This year, the celebs did not disappoint, sporting eye-catching jewelry that was just as unique and impressive as their talents. While not all of the attendees could take home an Oscar, some definitely earned points for their style decisions. From yellow gold diamond-studded bracelets to oversized chandelier earrings, it was clear that this year, starlets were taking a risk on some bolder baubles.

Unsurprisingly, the prediction of colored diamonds having a strong presence on the red carpet proved to be true. This isn’t the first time colored diamonds were abundant at the Academy Awards. After all, when actresses really want to attract attention, they need to opt for stones in vibrant and unusual hues. Remember Gloria Stuart’s 15-carat blue diamond necklace at the 1998 Academy Awards? With a worth of $20 million, they have yet to be topped for the most valuable jewels ever worn at the Oscars.

In 2010, Kate Winslet turned heads in a $2.5 Million Dollars yellow diamond necklace and canary diamond stud earrings, as well as Tiffany & Co. yellow diamond bracelets. Both Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden and Allison Janney donned champagne diamond jewelry for the Oscars in 2012.

So which stars won for Best Jewelry this year?

Amy Adams

The “American Hustle” star stunned onlookers in a chic navy blue strapless Gucci gown, which had lapel-like detailing at the bust. Aside from the short train at the hem, though, the dress was relatively simple in shape and design, which meant that Adams could go all out with her jewels. She definitely didn’t hold back, either, with a bevy of pieces that added color to her otherwise subtle ensemble. She sported an 18k yellow gold rhodochrosite, lapis and turquoise earrings with diamonds, an 18k yellow gold square modified brilliant yellow diamond bracelet, and a yellow gold ring with fire opal, pink sapphire, yellow diamond and spessertite beads.

Camilla Alves

It was a big occasion for Alves’ husband Matthew McConaughey, who took home his first-ever Oscar for Best Actor. Still, wife Camila Alves drew quite a bit of attention as well on McConaughey’s arm. Between her blush pink dress, sleek updo and soft makeup, her overall look was soft and feminine. She couldn’t have picked better baubles to complement her gown, either: A pair of Lorraine Schwartz rose gold and pink diamond earrings and a rose gold and diamond ring only accentuated the romance and warmth of her ensemble.

Louise Roe

In a sea of pink and blue, Roe stood out wearing a one-shouldered green gown with a lace sleeve. What better way to accent a forest-hued dress than earth-toned stones? For her accessories, she slipped on an 18k rose gold diamond bangle, champagne diamond briolette chandelier earrings set in 18k rose gold, and an Animal World Collection 18k rose gold ring with brown diamonds, onyx, and blue sapphires. Combined with her natural-looking waves and neutral makeup, the chocolate diamonds were a perfect choice.

Lady Gaga

Leave it to Gaga to astound attendees. This time, though, she caught some stares for her unexpectedly sophisticated attire, which included a metallic ballerina pink Versace dress. Even though her gown already had substantial sparkle, she donned Lorraine Schwartz rose gold and 20 carat diamond studs and rose gold and diamond bracelet to up the ante. The highlight, though, was her rose gold and fancy gray diamond ring surrounded by pink diamonds.
