Alexa Vega Shows off new Canary Diamond

September 23rd, 2013 by Noam Flint

Celebrity engagements are always big news, especially when the ring that sealed the deal is one-of-kind. The recent trend of unique engagement rings looks to have staying power, and one of the latest examples of the style comes from a young Hollywood couple. Alexa Vega, the 25-year-old actress best known for her role in the “Spy Kids” series, recently got engaged to her boyfriend of one year, Carlos Pena, a 24-year-old actor and singer who made waves as a member of the group “Big Time Rush.”

Making it official

Vega and Pena dropped a few hints about their engagement before making it official. Each placed suspicious photos on several social media sites, including one picture that had a faint view of the engagement ring. Over the course of the past few days more details have emerged, ranging from stories about how Pena popped the question to details about the gorgeous canary diamond ring.

Pena proposed to Vega during a dinner with more than 25 friends, family and band mates present. The group had just boarded a cruise to destinations in Jamaica and Mexico and was celebrating the sailing when the actor began making a speech. He then surprised Vega – she was the only guest who didn’t know about the impending proposal – by getting down on one knee.

About the diamond

While the lovebirds are garnering their fair share of headlines, much of the attention has been focused on the colored diamond ring Vega is now sporting. Although the couple has not released too many details about the ring, the public has been able to get a glimpse of the sparkler as Vega completes press for her upcoming film. Most recently, the actress walked the red carpet at the premiere of the movie, “Machete Kills,” and onlookers couldn’t help but notice the ring.

According to the photos, the engagement ring features a rather large cushion cut yellow diamond as the centerpiece (cushion being the classiest shape for yellow diamonds). The yellow gem is surrounded by a circle or two of melee white diamonds and the band (the shank) is studded with stones as well. A classic Halo setting which is pretty much the ideal for yellow diamonds.

There’s been no word on how many carats the ring weighs in at, but it is certainly a large piece and likely cost Pena a pretty penny.

Pena told MTV News that he had the diamond for about a month before he popped the question.
